How We Research
Rankings are only worth reading if you know how they were produced — including their limits. This page is the honest version.

Start here: what these guides are
Hopui's guides are desk research. We compare every relevant product sold on Amazon UK on specification, price history, and the pattern of verified-purchase feedback, then rank them and explain the reasoning.
We have not sat in these chairs. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and you should be sceptical of any site in this category that claims a testing lab without showing you one. Plenty of affiliate sites describe hours of hands-on testing they never did, because it converts better. It is also, straightforwardly, lying to you.
That limitation is stated at the top of every guide, and every figure we publish is labelled with where it came from.
What we compare
For a full-body massage chair guide, the shortlist starts from every listing in the category and removes the products that are not what they appear to be — chair pads, massage cushions, office chairs with vibration motors, and reclining armchairs with a heat pad. That alone eliminates most of what a search for “massage chair” returns.
Each surviving listing is then compared on:
- Roller system — fixed array, or tracked 2D / 3D / 4D. This is the single largest determinant of what a chair actually feels like.
- Track shape — S-track or SL-track, which decides whether the glutes and upper hamstrings are covered at all.
- Provision — airbag count, heating zones, foot rollers, programme count, zero-gravity stages, body scan.
- Price against its own history — a chair permanently discounted from an inflated RRP has the discounted price, whatever the strikethrough says.
- The rating distribution — both the average and, more importantly, how many ratings are behind it.
How we weight customer ratings
This is where most round-ups in this category go wrong. A 5.0 average across five ratings is not evidence; a 4.4 across 332 is. Massage chair faults surface late — upholstery, airbag seals, and control boards typically fail between months six and eighteen, not in week one — so a listing only a few months old has not yet had the chance to reveal its problems.
Our rules:
- Chairs with fewer than roughly 20 ratings are excluded, unless the specification is unusual enough to be worth flagging — in which case the thin rating base is stated explicitly as a caution in the entry itself.
- Where two chairs are close, the one with the longer rating history ranks higher. This is why entries in our guides sometimes sit above chairs with better averages.
- We read the negative reviews, not just the score, and look for the same complaint recurring rather than one angry outlier.
Star ratings shown anywhere on this site are labelled asAmazon customer ratings. They are not a Hopui score, and we deliberately do not republish them as our own structured data.
What we verify ourselves
Not much, and we would rather say so than inflate it. We confirm that the ASIN we link to is the product we describe, that the listing is currently live and sold in the UK, and that the specification claims we quote actually appear in the manufacturer's own material rather than a reseller's summary. We re-check prices on the schedule below.
Everything else — dimensions, airbag counts, roller behaviour, noise — is the manufacturer's claim, presented as such and never as a measurement.
How rankings are decided
There is no scoring formula, because a weighted average of features would imply a precision this method does not have. Each guide is an editorial judgement, argued in the text, with the trade-offs stated so you can disagree with our weighting and reach your own answer.
Awards like “Best Value” or “Best Budget” describe a position within the shortlist. They are not claims about the whole market.
What we will not do
- Claim hands-on testing we have not done.
- Publish an invented score, measurement, or tester panel.
- Present a manufacturer's specification as an independent finding.
- Republish Amazon's customer ratings as Hopui review markup to chase rich results.
- Accept payment for a placement, a rank, an award, or a mention.
- Fill a guide with seven picks when only four deserve one.
- Leave an error standing. Corrections are made on the page, with the updated date changed.
Updates and price checking
Guides are reviewed quarterly and prices are re-checked more often. Each guide shows the date prices were last verified. This category discounts aggressively enough that you should always confirm the current figure on Amazon before buying — the price at checkout is the one that applies.
How this is funded
Affiliate commission, disclosed in full on ourdisclosure page. Commission rates within a category are effectively flat, so we have no financial reason to prefer one recommendation over another — and a strong one to avoid pushing you toward a product you will send back.
What would change this
Hands-on testing is the obvious upgrade, and it is what we would spend the first meaningful revenue on. If and when we test these units directly, this page will say so, the guides will be re-written from primary observation, and the distinction will be obvious rather than buried.
Tell us we're wrong
If you own one of these chairs and your experience contradicts our reasoning, that is more valuable than anything on this page. Write tohello@hopui.com.
