Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Hopui collects when you visit hopui.com, why, and what you can do about it. We have tried to write it in plain English rather than boilerplate.

Last updated

The short version

Hopui is a static website. We do not ask you to create an account, we do not run advertising networks, and we do not sell personal information. The main privacy consideration on this site is that our outbound product links are affiliate links, and the retailers on the other end of them set their own cookies. That is described in full below.

1. Who we are

Hopui operates hopui.com (“the Site”). For the purposes of the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation,Hopui is the data controller for personal information collected through the Site. You can reach us atprivacy@hopui.com, or by post at Hopui, 71–75 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us directly

If you email us — for example to ask which chair suits your height, or to exercise a privacy right — we receive your email address, whatever you put in the message, and any information you choose to include. We use it to answer you and for nothing else.

Information collected automatically

Like every website, the Site is delivered by a hosting provider that keeps standard server logs. These typically include your IP address, browser type and version, the pages you requested, the time of the request, and the page that referred you. These logs are generated by our hosting provider as a normal part of serving traffic and detecting abuse, and are retained by them on their standard schedule.

Information stored on your device

The Site stores a single item in your browser's local storage, under the keyhopui-theme, recording whether you chose light or dark mode. It contains no identifier, never leaves your browser, and is not sent to us or to anyone else. Clearing your site data removes it.

3. Cookies and affiliate tracking

We do not set advertising or tracking cookies of our own. However, when you click a product link on this Site, you are sent to a retailer — most often Amazon — with a tracking parameter identifyingHopui as the referrer. The retailer then sets its own cookies on your browser under its own privacy policy, so that any purchase you make within their cookie window is attributed to us and we earn a commission.

In practical terms this means: we can see aggregate, anonymised reports from the affiliate programme showing that some number of items were ordered through our links. We cannot see who you are, what else you bought, your payment details, or your address. As an Amazon Associate, Hopui earns from qualifying purchases.

The relevant policies for our affiliate partners are theAmazon.co.uk Privacy Noticeand, where applicable, the equivalent notice published by the retailer you are sent to. You can block or clear these cookies through your browser settings, though doing so does not affect the price you pay.

Analytics

At the time of the last update to this policy, no third-party analytics script runs on the Site. If we add one, we will use a privacy-respecting, cookie-free provider, update this section before it goes live, and change the date at the top of this page.

4. How we use information, and our legal basis

  • To operate and secure the Site — server logs, retained by our host. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in delivering a working, non-abused website.
  • To respond to you — correspondence you send us. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering enquiries, or performance of a request you made.
  • To earn affiliate commission — attribution handled by the retailer. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in funding the Site, and the retailer's own basis under their policy.
  • To remember your display preference — local storage only. This is strictly necessary for a feature you actively chose, and no identifier is involved.

5. Who we share information with

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers. Information reaches third parties only in these ways: our hosting provider processes requests in order to serve pages; our email provider carries messages you send us; affiliate partners receive the fact that a click came from Hopui; and we may disclose information where we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect our rights or someone's safety.

6. How long we keep it

Correspondence is kept for as long as needed to handle your enquiry and for a reasonable period afterwards for our records — generally no more than 24 months — unless you ask us to delete it sooner. Server logs are retained by our hosting provider under their own retention schedule, typically a matter of weeks. Your theme preference stays in your browser until you clear it.

7. Your rights

If you are in the UK, EU, or EEA

You have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to our processing of it, to data portability, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office —ico.org.uk, helpline 0303 123 1113. In the EU or EEA it is the authority for your country of residence. We would appreciate the chance to resolve it first, but you are not required to come to us before going to them.

If you are a California resident

Under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA you may request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected, request deletion or correction, and are protected against discrimination for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, so there is no “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” mechanism to offer — there is nothing to opt out of. We honour Global Privacy Control signals as a matter of policy in any case.

Other US states

Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws — including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, and Oregon — have broadly equivalent rights of access, correction, deletion, and opt-out. The same statement applies: we do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising.

How to exercise any of these

Email privacy@hopui.com with what you would like us to do. We will respond within one month, as UK and EU GDPR require, extending that by up to two further months only where a request is genuinely complex — in which case we will tell you inside the first month. US state requests are answered within 45 days. We may need to ask you a question to confirm we are dealing with the right person, and we will not charge you for a reasonable request.

8. International transfers

The Site is served from a global content delivery network, so pages are delivered from whichever location is nearest to you. Some of our processors — including our hosting and email providers — are based outside the UK, which means information necessarily crosses borders. Where that involves personal data originating in the UK, EU, or EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards: the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, as applicable.

9. Security

The Site is served over HTTPS. Because it is a static site with no database, no user accounts, and no payment processing, the amount of information available to lose is deliberately small. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children

The Site is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Links to other sites

This Site links out to retailers and manufacturers. Once you follow one of those links you are on someone else's website, governed by their privacy policy and terms, and we have no control over what they do. We encourage you to read the policy of any site that asks you for personal information.

12. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change, and revise the “last updated” date at the top. Material changes will be flagged prominently on the Site. Continuing to use the Site after a change means you accept the revised policy.
